THINPREP PAP TEST

A robust body of evidence in multiple medical journals show the ThinPrep Pap test has improved specimen adequacy and cervical disease detection versus conventional Pap testing.48

Clinician versatility

The ThinPrep Pap test was the first liquid-based Pap test FDA-approved/cleared for HPV, chlamydia/gonorrhea and trichomoniasis testing out of the same vial.

Aptima® HPV assay, Aptima® HPV 16 18/45 Genotype assay, Aptima Combo 2® assay for CT/NG, Aptima® Trichomonas vaginalis assay, Cervista® HPV HR assay, Cervista® HPV 16/18 assay, cobas® HPV assay, cobas® 4800 CT/NG Test, digene® HC2 HPV DNA Test, ProbeTec™ CT/GC Qx Amplified DNA assays

FDA approval/clearance gives you the confidence in test results without having to self-validate tests.

Since the ThinPrep Pap test was approved by the FDA in 1996, more than 170 studies have demonstrated its benefits, including increased disease detection, reduction of equivocal diagnoses, improved specimen adequacy, adjunctive molecular testing and morphology assessment.48 These published, peer-reviewed studies involving hundreds of thousands of patients show a significant benefit in the ThinPrep Pap test compared to a conventional pap smear.48 These studies, conducted in 7 different countries over 4 continents, also consistently demonstrate improved specimen adequacy.48 Additionally, the ThinPrep Imaging system has been shown to provide further improvements in disease detection along with decreased false negative rates compared to manually reviewed ThinPrep Pap test slides.49*

The weight of the evidence

Specimen collection is a key factor in obtaining adequate and representative samples for analysis. Therefore, when collecting specimens, it is important to use appropriate devices and techniques, such as avoiding the use of lubricants.* The ThinPrep Pap test’s standard preparation method for specimen collection has been used by physicians for over 10 years for a variety of cytologic specimens.50

*The use of lubricants should be avoided prior to specimen collection.Lubricants can adhere to the filter membrane and may cause poor cell transfer to the slide. If its use is unavoidable, the lubricant should be used in minimum amounts, a carbomer- free lubricant is recommended. ThinPrep Integrated Imager logo

ThinPrep Integrated Imager

The ThinPrep Integrated Imager, Hologic’s newest Pap test imaging solution, combines state-of-the-art imaging technology with the convenience of dual slide review in a single, automated, stand-alone microscope that fits neatly on a desktop.

With the ThinPrep Integrated Imager, individual slides can be imaged and ready for cytotechnologist review in approximately 90 seconds. During that time, the device scans each cell and cell cluster using optical density analysis and proprietary interpretation algorithms across the entire slide. It then identifies 22 fields of interest for the cytotechnologist to determine if further review is needed. Slide reviews are tracked on an intuitive touchscreen. The ThinPrep Integrated Imager tracks each slide’s progress to ensure that abnormal cells and fields of interest are properly presented and reviewed. Areas of concern identified during the review can be electronically marked for further analysis. At any point in the process, users have the ability to review a specific field of interest, manually scan the surrounding area and return to the field of interest to complete the review. If the cytotechnologist determines no additional analysis is needed, slides can be quickly and easily signed out as negative, right then and there.

ThinPrep Imaging
System and
Review Scope

The ThinPrep Imaging system represents a significant advance in diagnostic capability, with 2 unique components for comprehensive and accurate cervical cancer testing. The ThinPrep Imaging system has been shown to provide increased sensitivity and specificity over manually reviewed ThinPrep Pap test slides.53 In 1 study, the ThinPrep Imaging System was found to have a 50% reduction in false negative fraction when compared to manually reviewed ThinPrep Pap test slides.54

As cells progress from normal to abnormal, their nuclei become progressively larger and darker. Imaging identifies 22 areas of interest within the slide and directs cytotechnologists to examine them.55 This allows for increased sensitivity and specificity over manually reviewed ThinPrep Pap test slides, reduced false negatives and improved standardization at each stage of sample processing.49
